Status
On May 16, 2024, the Ministry of Justice and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission organized a launch event to initiate the development of a National Action Plan (NAP) on Business and Human Rights (BHR). This initiative follows Ethiopia’s acceptance of a recommendation during the most recent Universal Periodic Review (UPR) to develop such a plan.
During the launch event, an Amharic translation of the UNGPs was introduced.
The Ministry of Justice presented a roadmap and information on the Steering Committee and Technical Committee. Key milestones in the roadmap include:
1. Multistakeholder event to get CSOs inputs (completed),
2. High level NAP launch event (completed),
3. & 4. Induction for the Steering Committee & the Technical Committee (completed),
5. Training for committee members and experts of implementing institutions (completed),
6. Conducting a National Baseline Assessment and a validation workshop (in-progress),
7. Consultations at Federal and regional governments level,
8. Drafting of the NAP,
9. Consultation on the draft,
10. Revising the draft in line with comments gathered, followed by approval,
11. Publication,
12. Promotion of the NAP on BHR (Implementation).
